Yes, but not the way an AI video generator does. Claude has no video generation model, so on its own it cannot create realistic footage or people. It makes videos in three ways: with Claude Motion, a beta feature in the Claude app for Team and Enterprise plans that builds short animations as code and exports them as MP4; by writing video code in Claude Code with Remotion (React), HyperFrames (HTML) or FFmpeg, rendered on your computer; or by driving video tools through MCP: generation APIs such as Runway or Google Veo make the footage, and editing APIs such as JSON2Video assemble finished videos with voice-over and captions in the cloud.

Which route fits depends on what you need: an animated explainer, custom motion graphics, AI-generated shots, or many narrated videos made from data. This page compares the five options, says where each one works (claude.ai, Claude Desktop or Claude Code) and what it costs. Everything here was checked on 18 October 2026.

1. Claude Motion: animations inside the Claude app

Claude Motion was announced on 8 October 2026. You describe an animation, Claude builds it as code from a template, and you export it as an MP4. Anthropic's examples are explainers, animated charts and product walkthroughs: the code animates text, charts, shapes and images.

Claude Design, which every plan has (including Free), makes slides, prototypes and visual designs, but it exports PPTX, PDF or HTML, not video.

2. React code with Remotion (Claude Code)

Remotion turns React components into videos, and it is one of the most common ways to make videos with Claude Code. Remotion has an official Claude Code plugin (claude plugin marketplace add remotion-dev/claude-code-plugin, then claude plugin install remotion@remotion) and agent skills. Claude writes the compositions; you preview them in Remotion Studio and render them on your computer, or on AWS Lambda in your own account for volume.

Remotion gives the most creative freedom of any route here: anything React can draw. In exchange, you own a codebase and a rendering setup, and companies of 4 or more people need a paid licence. Our Claude animation guide has a minimal Remotion example, and our Remotion comparison covers the licence and the Lambda costs in detail.

3. HTML animations with HyperFrames (Claude Code)

HyperFrames is HeyGen's open-source (Apache 2.0) framework: a video is an HTML file, and the renderer steps through it frame by frame in headless Chrome and encodes it with FFmpeg. It has a Claude Code plugin and agent skills, so Claude writes the HTML, CSS and GSAP animation for you. It needs Node 22 or later and FFmpeg on your computer. Rendering locally is free; HeyGen also offers cloud rendering, which is billed (the price is not published).

HyperFrames suits people who think in web pages rather than React. A minimal example, next to Remotion and JSON2Video, is in Claude animation: Motion, Remotion, HyperFrames and JSON2Video. HeyGen also has a HyperFrames connector in Claude's connector directory, in beta, whose renders draw on HeyGen credits.

4. AI footage: generation APIs through MCP

When you need realistic shots, such as a drone view, a product on a table or a person walking, a generation model has to make them, and Claude does not have one. What Claude can do is drive one. Runway, Artlist and OpenArt publish remote MCP servers that you add to claude.ai as custom connectors; in Claude Code you can also use Google's open-source Genmedia MCP server for Veo. Claude writes the prompts and calls the tools; the vendor's model makes the clips, and the vendor bills you.

Generated clips are short (usually 4 to 10 seconds) and come without voice-over, captions or branding. Prices, connector addresses and how to turn clips into a finished video: Claude video generation.

5. Finished videos: an editing API through MCP

An editing API assembles a finished video from parts: your clips or images, text, music, a text-to-speech voice-over and captions. With the JSON2Video MCP server connected, Claude writes the video as a JSON document, checks it with the validate_movie tool, renders it with render_video in our cloud, and gives you the MP4 link. Nothing renders on your computer, and the same JSON becomes a template for the next 50 videos.

The setup takes a few minutes in Claude Code:

npm install -g @json2video/cli
json2video auth --api-key YOUR_API_KEY
json2video mcp install claude

Where each route works: claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code

The difference that matters most is local versus remote MCP servers. A remote server runs on the vendor's side and is reached over the internet; a local server runs on your computer.

App What it can use for video
claude.aiClaude Motion (Team and Enterprise). Remote MCP servers only, added as custom connectors: available on the Free plan (one connector) and on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Runway, Artlist and OpenArt can be added as custom connectors this way. Local MCP servers are not available in claude.ai.
Claude DesktopThe Claude app that also runs local MCP servers, configured in claude_desktop_config.json or installed as desktop extensions. The JSON2Video MCP server works here.
Claude CodeLocal and remote MCP servers, plugins and skills, and it runs commands on your computer. Every route except Claude Motion works here: Remotion, HyperFrames, FFmpeg, generation MCPs and the JSON2Video MCP (installed with one command).

Being clear about our own tool: the JSON2Video MCP server is a local (stdio) server. It runs in Claude Code and Claude Desktop (and in Cursor, VS Code and Windsurf), but it is not available as a claude.ai connector yet. In claude.ai you can still ask Claude to write the movie JSON, then paste it into the JSON2Video editor (Template → Import JSON) and render it there.

Worked example: a listing video from one prompt

With the JSON2Video MCP server connected in Claude Code, this is the whole request:

Make a vertical video for our new listing at 123 Oak Street. Use these three photos (front, kitchen, backyard), add a short voice-over for each, word-by-word captions and soft piano music.

Claude writes this movie JSON, checks it with validate_movie and sends it with render_video:

{
  "resolution": "instagram-story",
  "elements": [
    { "type": "audio", "src": "https://cdn.json2video.com/assets/audios/soft-piano.mp3", "volume": 0.2 },
    {
      "type": "subtitles",
      "language": "en",
      "settings": { "style": "boxed-word", "font-size": 90, "position": "bottom-center" }
    }
  ],
  "scenes": [
    {
      "elements": [
        { "type": "image", "src": "https://cdn.json2video.com/assets/images/sample-house-front.jpg", "zoom": 2 },
        { "type": "text", "text": "Just listed: 123 Oak Street", "style": "003", "position": "top-left", "x": 60, "y": 120 },
        { "type": "voice", "text": "Just listed: 123 Oak Street, a four-bedroom craftsman home.", "voice": "en-US-EmmaMultilingualNeural" }
      ]
    },
    {
      "transition": { "style": "fade", "duration": 0.5 },
      "elements": [
        { "type": "image", "src": "https://cdn.json2video.com/assets/images/sample-house-kitchen.jpg", "zoom": 2 },
        { "type": "voice", "text": "A chef's kitchen that opens onto the living room.", "voice": "en-US-EmmaMultilingualNeural" }
      ]
    },
    {
      "transition": { "style": "fade", "duration": 0.5 },
      "elements": [
        { "type": "image", "src": "https://cdn.json2video.com/assets/images/sample-house-backyard.jpg", "zoom": 2 },
        { "type": "voice", "text": "And a large backyard. Listed at 849,000 dollars.", "voice": "en-US-EmmaMultilingualNeural" }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

The result: Claude polls check_status and replies with the link to a 1080×1920 MP4 of about 12 to 15 seconds: three scenes with a slow zoom on each photo, fades between them, a voice-over, captions transcribed from it, and music underneath. There are no durations in the JSON: each scene lasts as long as its voice-over. It costs one credit per second of video, so about 15 credits of the 600 in a free account (free renders carry a watermark).

To make the same video for the next listing, ask Claude to turn the address, photos and script into {{variables}}. The guide on video editing with Claude Code shows that step, plus editing an existing clip and making 50 videos from a spreadsheet.

Which route should you choose?

The routes also combine. A common pipeline is to generate a few shots with Runway or Veo, then have Claude assemble them with a voice-over, captions and your logo through an editing API.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude AI generate video?

Not with a model of its own. Claude has no video generation model, so it cannot create realistic footage or people. It can make animations with Claude Motion (Team and Enterprise plans, beta), write video code that renders on your computer (Remotion, HyperFrames, FFmpeg), or drive third-party tools through MCP: generators such as Runway or Google Veo for footage, and editing APIs such as JSON2Video for finished videos.

Can Claude look at or watch a video?

No. Claude accepts documents and images as uploads, not video files. The usual workaround is to give it still frames and a transcript of the video; open-source skills for Claude Code, such as claude-video, do this automatically. Claude then edits from the transcript and timestamps, not by watching.

What is Claude Motion?

A beta feature of the Claude app, announced on 8 October 2026, that builds short animations as code (explainers, animated charts, product walkthroughs) and exports them as MP4. It is available on Team and Enterprise plans only and counts toward the plan's usage limits. It does not generate realistic footage or people.

Can I make videos with Claude for free?

Partly. Remotion (for individuals and small companies) and HyperFrames are free to render on your own computer, once you have Claude Code. JSON2Video gives 600 free credits, which is 10 minutes of video, with a watermark and up to 60 seconds per video. Claude Motion needs a Team or Enterprise plan, and AI footage from Veo or Runway is paid per second.

Can I make videos in claude.ai without Claude Code?

Yes, in two ways: Claude Motion on Team and Enterprise plans, and remote MCP servers added as custom connectors, such as Runway, Artlist or OpenArt for AI footage. Local MCP servers, including JSON2Video's, run only in Claude Desktop and Claude Code.

Can Claude Code edit videos?

Yes. Claude Code can run FFmpeg on your computer to cut, join and convert files, and it can call a video editing API through MCP to add voice-overs, captions, music and text and render the result in the cloud. See video editing with Claude Code.
